Nicki Minaj Withdraws from the Twitterverse
In a blow to the Twitterverse and her 11 million faithful followers, hip-hop star Nicki Minaj has called it quits on Twitter, shutting down her account following a spat with one of her largest fan sites.
Minaj was said to be up in arms after fan site NickiDaily leaked tracks from her re-launched album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. She tweeted, 'And that’s exactly why I’m paying the barbz DUST right now! And deleting my twitter. Smdh – don’t cry for me argentina'. Adding, 'Like seriously, it's but so much a person can take. Good f***ing bye'.
Given she had more followers than Oprah, the move has come as a shock to many tweetaholics who have had their lifeline to the star and her personal antics cut off. With Minaj preparing to hit Aussie shores for a national tour in the coming weeks, she's also been dealing with the backlash of claiming she wanted to kill her abusive father in a recent interview. Which leaves us wondering - is all the controversy but a carefully crafted PR stunt to keep her album at the top of the charts?
Either way, Minaj isn't the first superstar to pull the plug on Twitter, following hot on the heels of Lily Allen, John Mayer and Miley Cyrus - all of whom have re-activated their accounts at one time or another. Which should give Minaj's fans a little ray of hope that she will at some point make her return to the twittersphere.
