Paris Hilton at a Northeast Party House Party? A Chat with Sean Kenihan

There simply aren’t enough house parties in the world, that’s a fact. Everybody wants to be a DJ, so it’s a mystery why one of the oldest forms of getting drunk, passing out somewhere around your friends house, and waking up to a series of genital-themed body art upon your person, isn’t more widespread. So whom, in this modern age, do you turn to when you want to go all Corey Worthington on the world and you just need someone to get everything started? Well, Paris Hilton has recently become a candidate as she has stepped into the world of DJing, but would you really want her on your decks? Sean Kenihan of Melbourne livewires Northeast Party House certainly doesn’t entertain the idea as he tells Everguide why he and his band mates are more equipped for the job.

Perri Cassie: How did your secret show go last night?
Sean Kenihan: Yeah it went really well, it was just small and cosy and nice. There were a few people there, maybe 30 or 40 people. I only posted it before we went on stage. The plan wasn’t really for people to come and watch, we just wanted to make sure we had the set down, but at the same time as you hit the stage you get that feeling of, ‘oh, it’d be nice if there were more people here’.

PC: You guys have described the Melbourne music scene to be ‘as healthy as a Zoopa Doopa,’ does that mean it’s terrible but delicious?
SK: It was Mitch that said that but what I think he was trying to imply is that Melbourne is a very healthy music scene. It’s quite common knowledge that most of the good music that’s coming from Australia is coming from Melbourne (laughs).

PC: Tell me a little bit about your plans once you’ve toured the single, what are you working on bringing out next?
SK: Well, we’re working towards our debut album, we’re working on demos for that and they’re all sounding really good. ‘Pascal Cavalier’ is the single we’ve just released. We did some recording recently of the first few singles to go on the album and we were still in the midst of deciding how the album was going to shape up when we recorded those demos. So they’re a true representation of what’s coming up on the album, but at the same time we did a lot of recording and we’ll have to see (what it’s like) at the end of it.

PC: What should people expect from your upcoming tour?
SK: I think the Corner show is going to be the special one because it’s the home crowd. It’s a much bigger crowd (too), so there’s a bit more money in it from ticket sales, and we’ve got more stuff to mess around with – more cash... We’re pretty much dumping all of the profits from the Corner just into the show. We’re really excited to make it a really good night, so hopefully people come. As for the rest of the shows along the east coast, we’ll bring some of what we have at the Corner, so they’ll be special too. In other cities you don’t have the home crowd, so when you get a response it’s always that bit warmer. I mean, sometimes they don’t really know who you are, so if you win them over that can be a little more special.

PC: So there’s been a lot of buzz over the week about Paris Hilton’s new career path as a DJ, seems she’s now an in demand party starter. I want to talk to you a little bit about that.
SK: Oh very controversial!

PC: If you were throwing a house party what would be some of the pros of having Paris Hilton at your party?
SK: I struggle to think of a reason why I would want her there, I mean anyone can DJ. DJing is just like, picking songs off an iPod. Good DJs are just the one’s who pick the right songs, but maybe she’s got really good taste in music. So perhaps if I got to go through her iTunes library, I’d get a better idea of if it wanted her at my party.

PC: And some of the cons?
SK: She’ll probably attract those overly aggressive drunk males to my party, because that’s the kind of crowd she DJs to. That, and more people like Paris Hilton. I really don’t want her at my party. I mean, would you?

PC: Absolutely not. I wouldn’t want to eat the food if she’s been near it, and I’d have to wash anything she sat on.
SK: It’s nothing against her; she’s welcome at my party if she wants to come. But I wouldn’t pay her to come and DJ at my party, she’d probably charge a lot of money too.

PC: What are the reasons that Northeast Party House should be picked above Miss Hilton in the event they are looking for someone to get a party started?
SK: I guess because anybody that does know Northeast Party House, knows about us because of the music that we play and that we do start the party. I mean that’s kind of what we’re known for; we’re not known for binge drinking or whatever. Paris Hilton; she’s not a musician is she?

PC: Debatable.
SK: (Laughs) can I quote you as saying that in an interview?

PC: No. No, you cannot.
SK: Well, I don’t know… Northeast Party House will get things messier than Paris Hilton, but we’ll do it in a much more enjoyable way.

PC: A different kind of mess I hope.
SK: Yeah that’s right, we’ll create a Northeast Party House mess, not a disgusting mess… I don’t even know what her mess is… she is a mess (laughs).

PC: If you could throw an all-star house party who would you invite?
SK: That’s a good question for Jackson our guitarist because he knows everybody. You can come to my party.

PC: Oh, thanks man.
SK: I’d invite all of our friends because as long we have our friends then no one else really matters. We’ll invite people who like to party… um… Millions are great to party. DZ (Deathrays) looks like they like to party.... yeah they do love to party. And Mariah Carey- she looks like she likes to party.

PC: What if her and Paris Hilton are friends?
SK: They wouldn’t be. I mean you can’t help but pass judgment on someone like Paris Hilton as soon as you see her at a party, whereas (if you saw) Mariah Carey you’d be like, ‘Oh my god, did you see Mariah Carey!?’ It would be bizarre, but it wouldn’t be off putting.
