Z-Trip Returns to Australia
Almost ten years ago, while waiting for DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to come on at La Scala in London's Kings Cross, I watched a relatively unknown support DJ completely tear the room apart.
The tour was 'Product Placement', with all DJs playing 7"s only. As the crowd stared, slack-jawed, the smiling, unnassuming Z-Trip turned what could have been a gimmick into an hour of music so deft, funky and surprising he almost upstaged the headliners.
Shadow and Cut Chemist took DJ Z-Trip on that tour for good reason. As deep as his record collection is (and make no mistake, it's as deep as they come) guy knows how to bring a party. Where some DJs who've spent their lives digging for obscurities and practicing by themselves can get a little po-faced, Z-Trip never forgets that he's on stage to serve the crowd, and the crowd love him for it. Three years ago, Z-Trip was voted America's Best DJ by readers of DJ Times, and in the same year he appeared as a character in DJ Hero. Which might lead you to think he's sold out. And that's fine, whatever, just know that he's still one of the funnest DJs in the world. Technically flawless, always surprising and with a brand new A/V show, this will be fun as shit.
These are his first Australian shows in over two and a half years. Miss them at your peril.
