One time in year nine our music teacher thought it’d be a great idea to transform an exclusive portion of our class (ie. the people who could actually clap in time) into a fully-fledged band, ready for the big-time. And so she decked us out in pirate hats, made us play fusion jazz-metal and set up a couple of gigs where the only people who attended were friends obliged to out of sympathy.
As Jack Black said, “those who can’t do, teach”. Too bad
School of Rock wasn’t released when we needed it most – it would’ve saved all the explaining that has to be done whenever someone unearths the pictorial evidence. But if we can’t take advice from teachers, who do we learn from?
We’re going with People Who’ve Had Music Industry Success Themselves. People like Paul Kelly, Josh Pyke and Abbe May. Or maybe Dave Betty, The Jezabel’s manager, and Joan Warner, the CEO of Commercial Radio Australia (aka the company that represents 99% of our commercial radio broadcasters).
These guys are among the latest to be announced as speakers at
Song Summit 2012. The three-day music conference will take place at
Sydney’s Convention Centre from Saturday 26 – Monday 28 May as part of Vivid Sydney. The program is yet to be announced, but will include key note speeches, panel discussions, live performances, workshops and networking events.
