The alstroemeria, or Peruvian lily, is a native plant from the Andes. It was documented in the first Humboldt Botanical Expedition, and samples found their way back to Europe. In the Netherlands, the alstroemeria was later genetically modified to improve its length, strength and colours and is now sold back to South American growers through a complex lease and royalty system.
