Napoleon: Revolution to Empire Opening Night, NGV International, May 31
This year’s Winter Masterpieces collection follows Napoleon’s rise from revolutionary military leader to egomaniac emperor. The gallery is divided into sections displaying the decadence and imperial style that Napoleon developed or as NGV director Gerard Vaughan describes it ‘opulence, magnificence and bling’. The sections look at his rise as a military figure during the French revolution, his relationship with his first wife Josephine (who together the curators describe as the original celebrity power couple – eat your heart out Brangelina), his coronation and exile.
The exhibition runs til Sunday 7 October.
